Although our portfolio includes many varieties of spirits, good quality Rum holds a special place in our hearts. Why? Because it’s delicious, of course. But also because this is likely the best time in the history of the category to be a Rum drinker here in the US. But why should you believe me? Read on to find out.
Once dominated by mega corporations offering low to mid-tier options full of added sugar and coloring and devoid of transparency, distilleries are increasingly releasing additive-free rums worthy of sipping straight from the glass like you would a good Bourbon, Scotch or Tequila. And more than ever this quality liquid is starting to reach US shores thanks in part to a model popular in whiskey and tequila for years- the Independent Bottler.
Rather than distilling the spirit themselves, IB’s source some of the best barrels from distilleries and bottle them under their own label, often in single cask, barrel proof format. Although a number of IB’s are sourcing bourbons, ryes, and tequilas what most people don’t realize is until very recently, there were zero US-based IB’s sourcing and bottling premium rums for the US market. Surprised? I was. And by very recently, I mean just the past 5 years or so. Fast forward to today and companies like Holmes Cay, Raising Glasses, Down Island, Roaming Road, and Rolling Fork are finally bringing incredible rums from places like the Caribbean, South and Central America, Australia, Asia, and even Africa to US shores for the first time.
What this means for you, discerning sipper, is you’re lucky enough to be here for a new era of Rum where quality and variety are at an all time high. And the best news of all? Since high end Rum as a category is still a bit under the radar you don’t have to pay triple at auction or need a secret handshake with a liquor store owner to get your hands on the best stuff in the world.
